The Real American Dream
R.M. Hamilton
Ever since my family moved to America, back in 2007, I have always loved American history. It’s different from European history. It doesn’t focus on a list of Kings and Queens ascending to thrones. American history is a chronical of ordinary people, inspired by a vision and empowered by faith doing extraordinary things.
America is a tale of explorers who set out in ships for a land that might not even be there. America is a story of people who endured enormous hardship so they could worship their God, free from fear. America is the story of a small, under resourced band of colonies standing up to the might and power of Great Britain. America is the story of a nation who put an end to slavery. America is the story of a nation that altered the course of World War Two.
When you read a volume of European history, you know who most of the main players will be. The royals, the aristocracy and occasionally the clergy. But when you open a volume of American history, you don’t know who the heroes will be. They could be surveyors, they could be farmers, they could be silversmiths. They could be anyone.
And that I think, is what the American dream truly is. Not that anyone can ascend to enormous wealth, but that anyone can be called by God at anytime to stand up and do remarkable things, of such lasting worth, that the blessing endures for hundreds of years.
I wish you all a happy 4th of July. I thank you for what your nation has already contributed to the world. And I remind you, there are history books about America still to be written. Recall the heroes of the yesteryears. They were ordinary Americans. But with their God, and by faith, they built the most powerful nation on earth. And I’m not worried for America, because I know she still has those sorts of people in her, today.
