Of Fairies and Other Unpleasant Beings.

I am an almost pedigree Celt. And like many Celts, I believe in fairies. In fact, I believe in just about anything spiritual that you can tell me about. My belief in the supernatural is broad. My taste in utilization is narrow.

My mother was my chief educator on the subject of fairies. We were forbidden from having anything fairy related in the house when I was growing up. No delicate Cicely Mary Barker prints graced my bedroom walls. On the subject of fairies, my mother was adamant. They were real, they were pretty and they were not for our family. Or more specifically, they were not for our branch of the family. A schism over these sorts of things had split the family down the middle. Celtic families will always find a way to connect to the unseen realm. And the unseen realm is a divided place. Magic and God are old enemies.

It was when I was about nine years old that my mother's rightness on this subject was proven. I was always susceptible to dreams as a child. This night the dreams were terrifying. They were filled with death and I woke up in a panic. Then things became creepy. Hovering about five inches from my face was a small golden fairy. I fled from my room and spent the rest of the night with my parents.

In the morning, we got the news, a great uncle had died. His lifelong disgust for God was well known. He had died at the exact time that the fairy had turned up in my room. He had not died well.

I share this story as a cautionary tale. Not all roads should be taken and not all spiritual encounters should be sought. The occult is NEVER an appropriate way to connect to the Creator. In fact, he outright forbids it in the bible. The basis for a powerful connection to God is loyalty. He views all forms of involvement with the occult as intense betrayal. If there has been psychic or occult practices in your family line, you can expect a battle on your hands to get free from it. You can also expect some fairly creepy experiences on the road to spiritual freedom.

I am an almost pedigree Celt. I believe in fairies. I've even seen one. But I'm sticking to God. And in return, he's sticking to me.
