Anyone Can Write.

Anyone can write.

It’s just making stuff up.  It’s basically lying, without the moral condemnation.

It’s not hard.

Let’s give it a go.

You’ll need a start. Any start will do.

‘I saw.’

‘There was.’

‘It happened.’

These are all good starts.

Now you need a character. Posh people call this creature ‘the protagonist’. But the rest of us call it anything we want. The dark stranger, the beautiful woman, the gigantic kid-munching cockroach who lived in a cactus.

Voilà, you have a beginning and a being.

But that’s not much of a story.

‘I saw a warthog in a ballet tutu dancing on the train track at Paramatta Station,’ is a very weird statement but it’s not a story. Not yet anyway.

But…..add a train, hurtling down the track at a illegal, breakneck speed, and suddenly, you’re very, very close to having a story. And not just ANY story. A colossal, astonishing, amazing, and mesmerizing story that will make people sit up and say, ‘HEY! That person can really write!”

Because all you need now is an ending. Maybe it’s a happy ending, with the warthog getting publicity and fame and a dancing deal with the Sydney Opera House.

Or maybe, instead—oh dear, what a pity. They close the train track for ‘cleaning’ and everyone (except the warthog), takes the replacement bus home.

Who knows what will happen? Only you, until you tell us.

 That’s the magic of writing.

And anyone can do it. Anyone at all.
