Why Everyone Should Write. (At least a little).

By R.M. Hamilton

You are important.

 Yes, you.

You have thoughts and you have dreams. You have a beginning, a middle and one day you’ll have an end.

In some ways we’re all the same. We can all look up at the sky and see pictures in the clouds. But we don’t seem to see the same pictures in the same clouds.

That’s why we should all write.

At least a little bit.

You see a mermaid.

I see a dragon.

Someone else will see an elegant French ladybug.

And some people will just see clouds.

“Oh look,” that sort of person will say, “there goes an Altocumulus!”

That’s a nonfiction writer, by the way.

I have never met a boring person. Everyone is interesting, once you get them on the right subject. Everyone can write, once they realize what they care about.

I don’t think it matters what you write. I don’t think it matters how you write it.

What matters is WHY you write.

You should write, because you are you.

And nobody else, not anyone but you, is you.

Think about the wonder of that for a moment! No one else in the whole world has quite the same collection of stories and memories as you!

No one has quite the same perceptions and insights as you!

No one knows quite the same collection of facts as you!

You are awesome.

You are amazing.

You have a story worth telling because you are already a story being written on the pages of time.

And you’ll never be repeated again, in all the pages of history.

You, my friend, are a Once in a Lifetime Deal.

It says in the bible, “The human person is just a little breath; their days are like a fading shadow.”

That’s rather sad…except, it is also written in the bible, “O God, when I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are people that you care so much about them, the children of people that you care for them? You made them a little lower than the heavenly beings, and crowned them with glory and honour.”

I’m not a bible scholar, but that suggests to me that God thinks you’re pretty great. And if God thinks you’re pretty great, then your thoughts are worth writing down.

When you write something down, you extend your presence on earth. When you’ve gone to God, your words can still be speaking, down here on earth.

Maybe it’s a poem.

Maybe it’s a short story.

Maybe it’s a novel.

Maybe it’s a diary.

Maybe its just a recipe for really good brownies.

But it’s YOU, and it matters.

So please start writing.

Because you are important. And nobody but you can write the things that you are going to write.

As one of my favourite writers, Serena Dawson says, “Don't be afraid, just open yourself up a little to the inspiration that is all around you. Chase the moments of interest, excitement, curiosity, and wonder. Have some faith in your imagination. Get your pen or keyboard out and set those ideas free!”
